Hughes tops jockeys with 14 wins

DEFENDING CHAMPION JOCKEY Rasheed Hughes upped the ante in the just concluded Barbados Turf Club’s second horse racing season to come away as the winner with 14 wins.

Starting the final day, one win ahead of Rickey Walcott, Hughes extended his lead by booting home a treble astride Maussane, Refire and Infrared.

Those majestic wins advanced his earnings to $204 707 from 52 mounts. It was his second treble of the season. The highlight of those trebles came on day four when he won the 1 800 metres featured Midsummer Creole Classic with Melrose Racing’s Oberoi along with wins astride Amber Rose and Infrared.

The previous race day, Hughes registered his first hat-trick through Burbon Street, Siavonga and Katara. Fans can now look forward to the five race days in the third season to see whether he can maintain this momentum and repeat as overall champion. (LY)
