Removing Govt ‘not unions role’

TAKE THE FIGHT with Government to Parliament and not in the streets of Bridgetown.

That was the exhortation of the only Opposition leader in the island’s history to stage a successful no-confidence motion in a Prime Minister.

Independent MP Owen Arthur, who three years ago abandoned the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) which he led for 14 years as Prime Minister, blasted what he viewed as attempts to bring down the Freundel Stuart administration through non-parliamentary means.

In 1994, Arthur moved a censure motion against then Prime Minister Erskine Sandiford that was approved. Rather than resign, Sandiford, now Sir Lloyd, called a general election two years before the constitutional deadline that resulted in the Arthur-led Barbados Labour Party (BLP) coming to power. (GE)
