ANYONE WHO BELIEVES that size does not matter should have been in the University of Botswana Sports Centre when the Bajan Gems met powerhouses Australia in the Netball World Youth Cup in Gaborone yesterday.
Using height, girth and reach the number two team overran the Bajans 93-32 after an impressive start by the Gems ended in a disappointing 2-27 effort in the final quarter.
The Gems actually took an early 4-1 lead and could have pushed further ahead of their opponents, who have won the title four times, and could have extended that were it not for costly turnovers.
The Bajans looked like dwarfs next to their opponents, whose speed and use of their bodies gave them every advantage. However, the elevation of goalkeeper Shonte Seale caught the Aussies by surprise as she leapt and picked off many early high balls intended for the monolith-like Emma Ryde. (KB)
