Pride of St Leonard’s

A PORCELAIN CREST of St Leonard’s Boys’ School could be taking pride of place in its hall from September.

It was donated last Friday by old scholar and contractor Michael Roberts.

Roberts, who left the Richmond Gap, St Michael school in 1987, was back there to donate the 20-pound dry stone crest. Dry stone, he explained, was a type of porcelain.

He said the idea came to him after a chat in May this year with the school’s deputy principal.

“I said I would like to do something for the school and give back a little bit,” he said. Thus the idea of the making a copy of the crest was born.

Roberts said such a project would usually take three or four days, but because he was doing it “hands on” while running a building contractor business, it took about a month.

For him, work in porcelain is a hobby but he is looking to get into it full-time.

“I think I am getting too old for the construction business,” he said with a laugh.

Senior teacher at St Leonard’s Boys’, Winston Cumberbatch, said: “We were delighted to have someone come back to the school and invest so much in recognising the school in this way, because this is a very costly venture.”

He added they were “very, very happy to receive this token”. (HLE)
