Warning over attacks on media

THE International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is coming to defend Caribbean journalists, including those in Barbados, who are the target of attacks and intimidation or are subjected to poor working conditions.

The influential journalism crusading agency, the voice of oppressed and at-risk news people throughout the world, has already made contact with media heads, including one in Barbados, and press clubs in the Caribbean.

From the IFJ’s headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, Ernest Sagaga, head of human rights and safety, yesterday confirmed that he was aware of allegations of pressure on or intimidation of journalists by Caribbean governments, and complaints about conditions of work in the region.

The IFJ, he said, would “quite soon” be visiting the region order to meet with colleagues and senior editors. (AC)
