Seaweed prompts turtle watch

THE BARBADOS SEA TURTLE PROJECT is keeping an eye on the Sargassum seaweed that is covering some of the island’s prime turtle nesting spots.

In June 2015, the massive influx of the pelagic seaweed was blamed not only for trapping a number of turtles, but was responsible for the death of 42 Hawksbills at Long Beach, Christ Church.

This year, that beach is once again hidden under washed up seaweed, while rafts of it float in the near shore water.

But the sea turtle project’s director of public awareness and education, Carla Daniel, said she has checked the beach and, while it is covered, it was nowhere near what it was like in 2015. In addition, she said she had not seen any signs of turtle deaths. (HLE)
