GEORGETOWN – The United States has revoked the visitor visas of two opposition legislators after indicating that it was now in receipt of information that it did not have at the time the visas were granted, the main opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has said.
In a statement, the PPP said that Dharamkumar Seeraj and Nigel Dharamlall received recently, information from the Consular Section of the US embassy in Georgetown “informing them that their non-immigrant visas have been revoked . . .”.
“The letters further state that the Consular Section is now in receipt of information which it did not have at the time that the visas were granted,” the PPP said.
The opposition party said that the two legislators have since asked the American embassy here to provide the information that led to the revocation of their non-immigrant visas.
“They have instructed their attorneys at law to write to the Consular Section of the said Embassy requesting the new information which it has received,” the PPP said, adding it would pursue that matter as far as is possible.
The PPP said similar letters were received by the other persons who, like the two legislators, are facing fraud related charges in relation to Guyana Rice Development Board.
The party said the visas were revoked before the court determined whether they men innocent or guilty. “All the persons charged have pleaded not guilty to those charges and therefore, are presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
They have all been accused of omitting from the general ledger of the Guyana Rice Development Board a total of GUY$362 million while they were members of the board between 2012 and 2015.
They have been released on GUY$500 000 bail. (CMC)
