A RETIRED TRADE UNIONIST says it is time the island pursue contributory retirement plans for civil servants to deal with a public service pension bill that is rivalling the wages bill.

However, former general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers, Dennis Clarke, admits civil servants have become so accustomed to Government footing the bill that there might be some objections.

Clarke told the DAILY NATION in an interview that there must be a rational discussion on the burgeoning pension bill since, according to him, at last count it was “very fast near the figure that you pay out in salaries”. He predicted that within another 15 years, Government might be looking at other approaches to deal with the pension bill.

Clarke noted a contributory pension scheme would reduce the cost to Government and could operate the same way as did health or insurance plans. (HLE)
