Schoolgirls ‘a concern’

DESPITE THE RECENT violent attack at a secondary school and several other videos of fights involving schoolchildren being highlighted on social media, Assistant Commissioner of Police Erwin Boyce said the nation’s schools remained relatively safe in terms of their day-to-day operations.

Boyce, who spoke about the violence in schools involving girls, said: “We are concerned about the females and we cannot hide and say that we are satisfied because we are seeing not only the level of violence but we are seeing younger girls running away on being spoken to; they tend to run away from home and that is not a good indication of the family setting.”

He was speaking to the media following a graduation ceremony for students of two primary schools who participated in the ten-week DARE – Drug Abuse Resistance Education programme – at the Prince Cave Hall, District “A” Complex.

Boyce said the series of aggressive behaviours was worrying because much of it involved young females, which from a law enforcement perspective was something which must be paid close attention as it had “profound implications for who we are as a society and as Barbadians ”. (LK)
