Price of fish likely to rise

FISH LOVERS MAY have to pay more for fish because of the measures outlined in last week’s Budget.

President of the Barbados National Union of Fisherfolk Organisations (BARNUFO), Vernel Nicholls, made the point yesterday.

She pointed to the expected increase because of the hike in the National Social Responsibility Levy and other measures outlined in last week’s Budgetary proposals, stating that the price of diesel, ice and other inputs into the fishing industry will be impacted.

“I do not think that the fishermen can absorb the cost . . . . The boat owner cannot absorb that cost; otherwise, he would not be able to make it,” she said. (LK)
