OBESITY IN CHILDREN in Barbados has become a public health epidemic.

Currently, almost one in every three kids is overweight, and another 17 per cent of children between nine and ten years old are dealing with elevated blood pressure, both of which could lead to troublesome chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) as they mature.

These worrisome results form part of a recent study which was conducted by a joint task force from the Department of Paediatrics of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), the faculty of medical sciences of the University of the West Indies UWI), the Ministry of Education, and the School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition of McGill University in Canada.
