EVEN IN THE FACE of much talk about streamlining, even merging many of Barbados’ state enterprises, the idea of amalgamating the Urban Development Commission (UDC) and the Rural Development Commission (RDC) remains on the back-burner.
Interestingly, the suggestion that they should be merged to reduce Government outlays has not gone beyond talk because of serious concerns about the plight of the staff, the attitude of the union and the time it would take to complete the amalgamation.
That indication came from Derek Alleyne, the UDC director, who told the DAILY NATION in New York recently that the labour troubles at the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA), where staffers were in an uproar over the merger, taught the UDC some key lessons about the impact of any such move. (TB)
