A DETECTIVE, who was among a batch of lawmen promoted in January, died last night in a multi-vehicle crash in St Philip.
Clifford Bridgeman, 49, a station sergeant attached to the Criminal Investigations Department, died at the scene at the junction of Carrington and Edgecumbe Hill.
Witnesses at the scene said that a car struck three others before slamming into the unmarked police SUV which had come to a stop. The impact forced at least two vehicles off the road onto a grassy pasture where the occupants were eventually freed.
One driver was reportedly taken away for medical attention before the emergency services arrived.
Police cordoned off the area as people converged on the scene as news spread of the fatality. The number of lives lost on the roads now stands at 14.
Detective Orville Lovell was the other officer injured in the smash-up. (AC)
