UNDER SIEGE AFTER three Caribbean countries placed a ban on Brazilian corned beef, that South American country has decided to clear the air on last week’s investigation of numerous meat manufacturing plants that led to a major health scare.
The authorities in Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica this week banned Brazilian meat products off their shelves.
In response, Brazilian government officials yesterday issued an official statement through the World Trade Organisation (WTO) vouching for their health checks and standards. Only last Friday police investigated 21 meat manufacturing plants in four states.
“The export authorisations to all these 21 units have been preventatively suspended,” the statement said, adding they paid careful attention to products being exported. (BA)
