FOUR SWIMMERS achieved Carifta Games qualifying standards on the second day of the Barbados Amateur Swimming Association’s national long course national championships at the Aquatic Centre on Wednesday night.
Leading the way was 12-year-old Pirates swimmer Keilani Talma, who qualified for two events in the girls’ 11-12 age-group.
Talma comfortably won the 200 metres, finishing in a time of two minutes, 22.11 seconds, coming in more than four seconds ahead of Alpha’s Aza Dunwoody and inside the Carifta mark of 2:22.09.
Both Talma and Dunwoody achieved the qualifying standard in the 100 metres butterfly, shattering the rest of the field and finishing almost three seconds better than the Carifta requirement.
Talma again beat out Dunwoody, clocking 1:11.66 with the latter finishing in 1:11.84 as the two easily went under the 1:14.31 needed for Carifta.
The other two Carifta qualifiers came from the 11-12 boys’ 200 metres freestyle in which the Pirates pair of Zachary Taylor and Christopher Pollard also crushed the opposition.
Taylor won in 2:15.96 with Pollard second in 2:16.72, the pair getting under the Carifta standard of 2:17.96 and finishing well clear of the third-placed Kai Trotman who clocked 2:28.49.
In addition to Talma, established Alpha swimmers Danielle Titus and Nkosi Dunwoody completed doubles.
Titus had a hard-fought victory in the 13-14 girls’ 200 metres freestyle over Danielle Treasure, but was a runaway winner in the 100 metres freestyle, finishing almost five seconds faster than her nearest rival, Ashley Weekes.
Dunwoody easily had his way in both the 13-14 boys’ 100 metres butterfly and 200 metres freestyle. (HG)
