DEAR CHRISTINE: Unhappy after engagement

Dear Christine,

I AM UNHAPPY and at a loss to know what to do.

I was going around with a young man for some 18 months before we became engaged. Everything was okay until then. Right after the engagement, it seemed we did nothing but quarrel. He would get into tempers enough to strike me.

He is insanely jealous and one time was very cruel to me, when he saw a man sitting with me while I was having lunch.

The man means nothing to me; we work at the same place. Usually, the girls sit together but now and then one of the men would join us.

I was alone that day and this man joined me.

My boyfriend got on as though I was a prostitute on the streets. After that, he started coming by less and less and most of the time he is sulky. I am beginning to think this situation is impossible to handle.

At times I look at other seemingly happy couples and wish with all my heart that we could be more like them. Christine, on rare occasions he could be nice and loving. This only happens sometimes. What advice can you give?

– P.C.

Dear P.C.,

I think you’re putting your very life in danger based on what you have told me about this guy. He has already physically abused you. Any man or woman who is insanely jealous makes life a burden for his or her partner.

It is true that we cannot always expect 100 per cent in our relationships but the odd occasion when he is nice and sweet is just not enough.

Think very carefully before you marry this man. Don’t be carried away with the odd happy time.

Just because you feel great with a man five per cent of the time, does not mean you should imagine that he’s ever going to improve on that score. It strikes me that he is more often a pain in the neck than a pleasure to be with.

If he keeps up his present attitude, I suggest you consider getting out of this destructive relationship at once.
