BARBADIANS DO NOT readily seek help for mental health as people in other countries would.
That is the view of intern counselling psychologist at The St Michael School, Georgina Jarvis, who was the facilitator at the monthly meeting of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) yesterday evening.
“They like to think they can sort things out at home . . . . Psychology seems to be a newer discipline here in Barbados, but it can make a huge impact, and depression is very difficult to deal with. It’s difficult to live with somebody that’s suffering from depression, it’s difficult to live with it, so people need help. They deserve help. They should ask for help,” Jarvis encouraged.
The North American psychologist said that in her experience in Barbados there are not a lot of children who are clinically diagnosed, but “there are signs and symptoms that cause concern”, and she is providing ongoing counselling for some of those youngsters. (YB)
