‘Better plastics’ push

The head of an environmental non-governmental organisation (NGO) is urging Government and importers to continue the hunt for better alternatives to oil-based plastics and materials.

Programme manager at the Future Centre Trust, Ann Harding, says the environmentally-friendly replacements to plastic bags and containers, which are currently on the market, are better than what was there before, but there is still a catch.

“We are trying to do better but the alternatives that we are approving still require a commercial composter,” she told THE NATION.

“All of the alternative materials we looked at when the consortium of NGOs and environmentalists advised Kirk Humphrey [Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy] back in September last year – and we had some really knowledgeable people. And they did advise that these are better alternatives but they still require a commercial composter.” (HLE)
