Lewis backs Burke to run faster

LEGENDARY American athlete Carl Lewis is backing young Barbadian sprinter Mario Burke to run a number of personal bests on the collegiate circuit this season.

The 19-year-old Burke, a CARIFTA Games double spint gold medallist in 2015, is on an athletics scholarship at the University of Houston where Lewis is the long jump and sprint coach.

Burke started his 2017 season by winning the men’s 60 metres at the Mark Collegian Memorial Indoor meet in 6.65 seconds last Saturday. Teammate Eli Hall-Thompson was second with the same time.

“He never ran the 60 indoors and last year he was able to get down to 6.68 seconds after his first meet was 6.74. I think right now, my goal for him is to run under 6.60, which is obviously a world-class time,” Lewis told NATION SPORT. (EZS)
