BARBADOS’ STATE-OF-the-art Forensic Sciences Centre is being “underutilised” in the investigation of certain crimes.
The charge has been made by the island’s sole qualified forensic nurse, Mary Thompson, who said facilities such as a room for the examination of rape victims and rape kits at the Culloden Road lab were not being adequately used despite the difference they could make.
“We have a state-of-the-art forensic lab on the island and I think that we need to connect our dots,” Thompson said in an interview with the SUNDAY SUN.
She insisted more extensive use of the facilities could benefit both accused and victims of violence, while citing, as an example, one high profile case in which a rape accused was remanded but subsequently freed after the complainants fought to clear the name of the accused who they said had not been the perpetrator.
