MINISTER OF TRANSPORT and Works Michael Lashley is calling for a greater presence of truant officers at bus terminals.
At the start of the new school term yesterday the minister expressed concern about the number of schoolchildren loitering at the Fairchild Street terminal.
From as early as 7 a.m. school buses were spotted at the terminal gates but instead of the usual rush for seats, some children chose not to board. As Lashley approached them a small group was seem scampering out of the southern door of the terminal.
“Principals need to send some persons down here; it may be a teacher, to stop some of these students from liming in here. And from our end to ensure that they clear the bus children . . . and I believe that truant officers need to patrol the terminal [from as early as 6:45], because I have a concern. Buses were on time but we have schoolchildren standing up and they are waiting on the route bus which is wrong,” Lashley told journalists. (TSG)
