Maskell shoots to top with Jones

SKEET SHOOTER Michael Maskell and versatile athlete Akela Jones are the Barbados Olympic Association’s (BOA) senior athletes of 2016.

The announcement was made during the BOA’s awards ceremony at Hilton Barbados on Friday night where legendary United State’ athlete and multiple Olympics gold medallist Carl Lewis delivered the feature address and BOA President Steve Stoute gave the welcome address.

Teenaged Olympic Games swimmer Alex Sobers and 14-year-old Barbados, Caribbean and Canadian Open squash champion Meagan Best were named junior athletes of the year.

Other junior athletes recognised were athlete Sada Williams, surfer Che Allan, badminton player Shae Martin and Amanda Haywood for her exploits in badminton and squash.

Olympian Freida Nicholls is presented with a special recognition award by Dr Adrian Lorde, chef de mission of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games team.

Special individual recognition was given to surfer Chelsea Tuach, equestrian dressage rider Roberta Foster, tennis player Darian King and cyclist Edwin Sutherland.

Receiving special recognition awards were the late Patsy Callender, Freida Nicholls, Aldeen Holder, Bill Hoad and Richard Hoad for celebrating 50 years of Central American and Caribbean (CAC) glory. Anton Norris was recognised for celebrating 50 years of both CAC and Commonwealth Games glory. (EZS)
