Tourism award for Griffith

CHIEF EXECUTIVE officer of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. William “Billy” Griffith has been honoured by the Barbados Association of Bermuda with a lifetime achievement award.

The association presented the Barbados Pride and Industry Award 1966-2016 in recognition of the Barbadian’s outstanding contribution to the tourism industry in Bermuda.

Griffith had a distinguished career in tourism in Bermuda where he served as director of tourism for six years before returning home in 2014 to take his current position in a Government-revamped Barbados tourism structure.

The veteran in the hotel and tourism industry started his career in 1979 as a management trainee at Sandy Lane Hotel where he spent nine years. He moved through the ranks to become director of sales and marketing.

The UK hotel chain Trust Houses Forte appointed him to the post of general manager of the Harmony Club in Bermuda in 1988 and later promoted him executive director of Forte Hotels Bermuda.

He was voted Bermuda’s Hotelier Of The Year in 1997 and in an outstanding career in that island, he also served as president and chairman of the Bermuda Hotel Association. (GC)
