CHRISTMAS IS HERE again! The Barbados Workers’ Union family has been in celebration mode this year as we observed the 75th Anniversary of this union, the centenary of the birth of its second general secretary, the Right Excellent Sir Frank Walcott, and of course, this country’s 50th Anniversary of Independence.

Today, the celebration is different; today we are celebrating the birthday of Christ. Wrapped up in this celebration, is the celebration of hope, of peace and of good news.

The celebration of good news is one which today so many of us crave, especially at a time when tensions, mistrust, deceit, broken promises, problems and overall, bad news appear to be the order of the day.

To a very large extent, cynicism and pessimism have become commonplace and ever so often we find ourselves, each one blaming the other for the stresses of the day.

However, Christmastime is that time of year when many of us park these negatives for a little merriment, to celebrate with family and friends and to exchange goodwill.

We are still reminded that God, Immanuel, is with us. So that despite the headlines, the disappointments and the forecasts we can celebrate the One, the only One that can do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.

The executive staff of the Barbados Workers’ Union has, throughout the course of this year, undertaken a thorough introspection and examination of what we offer and how we will continue to serve workers and their families in the coming years.

We want to assure you, our membership past and present and our prospective membership that we will not renege from our commitment for improved quality of life, for fairness, equality, justice and empowerment. With that said, we remind you that we cannot achieve this commitment to you where you are not committed to walk with us and stand up against injustice wherever it presents itself.

We wish you a peaceful season and close of this year and prepare for 2017, may that hope propel us into action, to inspire others and together, to build the future we want. Together we can do it – Unity is strength!
