WE ARE INTO that time of the year when caring, sharing and reaching out to those we love is of paramount importance. Christmas, however, is not just about family and those close to us, but is really a season in which we should be good to all mankind.

This period of celebration of the birth of Christ is a time when we want to both honour and uphold those things which truly represents His values.

Paying attention to the less fortunate among us is one such ideal. Looking around Barbados, it is evident that growing numbers of people are in dire straits, given the effects of a prolonged economic downturn.

For those whose financial circumstances are better, then this is the time to show the spirit of understanding. It is a moral duty for those who can afford to help put lives back together.

An excellent way to help is through the Salvation Army, an organisation of Christian soldiers working in the defence of their fellow men. The army’s feeding programme this year has uncovered the level of hardship many of our brothers and sisters face, and what has made it gut-wrenching is the increasing number of children who are in need and have had to join the queue.

That this vulnerable group of society has openly come forward because of their plight is no ordinary event, since parents and relatives have always done their utmost to shield children from this type of attention.

It is heart-warming that corporate Barbados has recognised this genuine need. Hopefully other corporate entities will join the initiative shown by Massy Distribution and Massy Insurance to reach out and help the Salvation Army not only before Christmas, but indeed afterwards.

This humanitarian group’s needs are many and varied. It must meet the requests of thousands on its onward march; people who are hungry, homeless, abandoned and some often abused. There must be resources set aside to meet such needs.

The Salvation Army has set a target of $800 000 which it would like to achieve but has been struggling given the tough times facing both individuals and businesses. The appeal must not be in vain, because with a little sacrifice from many, it could be realised. Add the Salvation Army to your gift list with a small monetary donation. If you don’t have the money, there are many creative ways you can still assist in this most worthy effort.

Remember, by your giving, you are providing more than material support, but helping the society to grow and getting over life’s challenges which can come our way.

The Salvation Army’s ethos is that of providing an opportunity to rebuild lives, reduce risks and support people. Get on board and this year show the spirit of love; be charitable, highlight true friendship, and be compassionate.
