HEALING HERBS: Catnip – nature’s cure-all

“You should spend that extra energy working out. This increases your endorphins and therefore makes you feel happier. Happy people have no time to be negative or worry about what someone else is doing.” – blackandmarriedwithkids.com

LAST WEDNESDAY, a social media friend sought some spiritual advice. Apparently some employees at her workplace are spending considerable time having malicious discussions about her.

Furthermore, they interfere each time she coordinates extraordinary projects at work and, worst of all, they spend considerable time trying to sabotage the projects or stand on the side jealously throwing tantrums and spreading negativity.

As a healer and a theology graduate, my solution is simple and its simplicity shocked her. All she was required to do was to tell her fellow employees two magical words: “love yourself”. When you love yourself you:

1. Immediately focus on your own problems to find spiritual solutions.

2. Try to assist others because happiness is flowing through your veins.

3. Recognise it is not positive to be malicious and sabotage others. Eventually, it reduces your self-esteem.

4. You understand that minding other people’s business shows up your unhappiness and this can lead to bitterness, brokenness and sickness.

5. You can stay quiet and let the Creator continually bless you with more extraordinary talent and gifts.

Whenever you forget to love yourself, read Proverbs 19:8: “To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper”.

As you read the above proverb, meditate on Nepeta cataria, also known as silent doctor catnip/catmint. The webpage eathealthylivefit.com reveals: “Because of its calming effect, Catnip can relieve the symptoms of stress, anxiety, nervousness and insomnia.” It adds: “Pain from migraines and toothaches can be alleviated by using catnip. It can also have a calming effect on the stomach and relieving cramps, such as menstrual cramps.”

Catnip can also treat cough congestion, boost the immune system, relieve headaches, and treat arthritis, gout and sprained muscles.

References about children and catnip can be found on herbalremedies.com: “It also works well in soothing babies and children and promoting restfulness and sleep,” the website says.

Research also shows that “the leaves or ointment made from the juice of this plant can be applied to haemorrhoids to soothe burning and itching or on eruptive skin infections such as measles and chickenpox”. Some people use it as a sexual enhancer.

This concludes the herbal series for November. We focused on the health benefits of cat’s claw, cat’s whisker, red cat tail, cat’s blood and today conclude with catnip.

Finally, remember to love yourself, thus assisting others to grow and glow.
