FIFTY FRUIT TREES are expected to be planted, one each at 50 schools over the next few days as part of the 50 Trees to 50 School Programme initiated by the Inter-American Development Bank’s Barbados Civil Society Consultative Group (ConSOC).
The project is part of the celebrations of the island’s 50 years of Independence.
Blackman and Gollop Primary School was the first to plant their tree following ceremony at the Staple Grove, Christ Church, compound this morning.
Chairperson of ConSOC Lalu Hanuman said the tree would not only be a healthy food source for the children but would also contribute to reducing the impacts of climate change.
Referring to trees as the “lungs of the climate” Hanuman spoke of the benefits of trees to the production of oxygen, which all living things needed.
Principals and representatives from the 35 primary school and 15 secondary schools also joined in the ceremony and selected their trees. (LK)
