Youth shine bright

THE FUTURE OF SONG, dance and drama is bright, if the performances on the last night of the NIFCA Performing Arts Finals were anything to go by.

Titled I’m Possible and sponsored by Sagicor, the juniors who took to the stage at Frank Collymore Hall on Monday evoked plenty of laughter and applause from beginning to end.

Standout performances came from Pinelands Creative Workshop’s Afroship, with a fusion of African and Barbadian Landship commands and movements; Ignatius Byer Primary’s original songs Let’s Celebrate Bim We Are 50 and Tribute To The Late Errol Walton Barrow; Gordon Walters Primary’s speeches Thanks And Praise and Barrow; St Cyprian’s Preparatory Boys’ original song Sugar Cane; Mount Tabor Primary’s Shine On Barbados; Mireya Hosein’s original song Barbados My Home and Luther Thorne Primary’s Celebrate Barbados.

The Hugh Griffith-directed Ignatius Byer Primary Choir was just top-notch. Performing together for only two years, the youngsters were in sweet harmony in Let’s Celebrate Bim We are 50, a song highlighting different aspects of Barbadian culture. The food lyrics and the line, “wash it down with a li’l mauby”, stood out. (GBM)
