The following tribute was paid to the late John Lovell, a teacher, trade unionist and member of the credit union movement by the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados.

“IT IS WITH REGRET that the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) learns of the passing of the late Bro. John Lovell, retired educator, trade unionist and credit unionist.

He was a past President of the Barbados Union of Teachers, and a stalwart of that organisation.

Bro. John Lovell will be remembered as an outstanding Barbadian who was dedicated to the cause of serving people.

He was passionate about representing the interests of workers, empowering workers, lobbying and advocating for change.

As a visionary of the post independent era in Barbados, his legacy speaks to the instrumental role he played in mobilising and empowering teachers. History will record that he used the leverage provided under the umbrella of the Barbados Union of Teachers, to successfully champion the establishment of the Barbados Teachers’ Cooperative Credit Union Limited.

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados in saluting his contributions to the development of trade union movement, underscores the fact that he understood the importance attached to trade union organising and the empowerment of the membership.

It is the hope of the CTUSAB that the spirit and intent of his contributions will serve as a catalyst in inspiring and motivating the ongoing efforts of both present and future leaders of the labour movement.

The Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados publicly extends condolences to the family of the late Bro. John Lovell and the leadership and members of the Barbados Union of Teachers.” (PR)
