Call for green watchdog

WITH NUMEROUS environmental breaches being reported, a retired university academic is calling for an independent watchdog body to monitor and hold Government and the private sector accountable.

Retired director of the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES), Professor Robin Mahon, described the absence of such an NGO as a significant gap that needs to be filled.

Mahon also pulled no punches as he lamented Government’s failure to bring the Environmental Management Act and a National Parks Act before Parliament after almost two decades.

“These two pieces of legislation have reportedly been working their way through the system since they were first drafted in 1998.” (WILLCOMM)
