EIGHT NEW WATER TANKERS will be added to the fleet of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) to provide relief for residents crying out for water.

In a press briefing at his Graeme Hall, Christ Church office today, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resource Management Dr David Estwick said the tankers should be out of the Bridgetown Port “today or tomorrow”.

Dr Estwick said the duties on the eight tankers were waived by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler.

This should being the number of tankers to 14, to provide “targeted relief” to the areas most severely affected.

Dr Estwick also announced the establishment of a Rapid Response Unit which will operate on a two-shift system.

This Unit will be responsible for quick response to customer reports on outages and leaks. He warned the BWA could not continue to operate as it has and there must be a shift to “service”, with penalties being incurred, as they fall under the Fair Trading Commission.

The Rapid Response Unit will also have an arm which communicates with the public, deploys the water tankers and fills the community water tanks, among other functions. (SAT)
