‘Private’ garbage route

COME NEXT MONDAY the face of garbage collection in Barbados will undergo a major make over.

From 6 a.m. private contractors will begin collecting household and business refuse in St Philip, St John, St Peter and St Lucy on behalf of the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA), leaving the SSA to concentrate its depleted fleet of compactor trucks and personnel on the seven remaining parishes.

Highly placed sources last night confirmed that at sunset top officials of the authority were still locked on talks that would confirm which private sector players would be contracted and how they would be paid for their services.

According to the source, the private contractors would pick up garbage between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. (RRM)
