TROPICAL STORM MATTHEW arrived a few hours later than originally expected, but still had more than enough time to put a serious lashing on Barbados yesterday.
Up to last night, no serious injuries had been reported across the wind- and rain-swept island, but from Indian Ground in St Peter and to Enterprise in Christ Church, residents were dealing with power outages, water shortages, falling trees and fast moving run-off from the deluge.
Up to press time, the country’s Department of Emergency Management (DEM) had yet to deliver an all-clear, having advised all and sundry to remain indoors to ensure their safety.
Yesterday’s 6 p.m. update by Barbados Meteorological Services indicated that more thunderstorms and high gusts, with swells of up to 13 feet, were expected into the wee hours of today. A small-craft warning also remained in effect. (BA)
