Lowest murder rate in survey

BARBADOS REMAINS one of the safest places in the Caribbean to live despite recording its highest murder count in a decade during 2015.

Last year, the island had 31 murders with a murder rate of 11 per 100 000 population; the most murders since 2006 when 35 people were killed.

However, the recently-released Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) report on crime and violence found Barbados had consistently recorded low murder rates when compared to four other Caribbean islands.

Last year, The Bahamas, which has a comparable population size to Barbados, recorded 149 murders, which was four times higher than Barbados’. In Jamaica, 1 192 people were murdered with a rate of 45 per 100 000, while Trinidad and Tobago had 410 killings with a murder rate of 31 per 100 000. (AD)
