POLICE YESTERDAY carted off a man after a citizen’s arrest by a father who claimed the suspect assaulted his daughter.

Last night the man remained in police custody under investigation in a rape allegation that was reported to lawmen last week.

The unfolding drama was recorded and made the rounds on social media sometime after the father, who was driving a van, spotted the man in Wildey, St Michael, pounced on him and held him in a headlock in a car park.

Several minutes later, police arrived at the Wildey Main Road area to rescue the suspect from the grip of the father and later the girl’s agitated grandfather.

Acting Station Sergeant Roland Cobbler, police public relations officer, confirmed that police had taken a man into custody and was investigating a report.

One witness told the DAILY NATION she came upon the commotion just as she was dropping off her child at school.

There were two men on the ground, she said, and the one doing the holding claimed that the man wearing an armhole shirt and shorts had sexually assaulted his 12-year-old daughter, who was still hospitalised.

Passers-by stopped and waited with the father who kept his hold on the man until four police officers arrived, handcuffed the man and put him in their vehicle. The officers then spoke with the father as the grandfather of the child arrived shortly after gesticulating in the direction of the held man. (AC)
