Shoppers ‘being misled’

SOME SUPERMARKETS have been accused of misleading customers by putting imported wings next to local ones.

The claim has come from outgoing acting president of the Barbados Egg & Poultry Producers Association Steven Layne who delivered his president’s report during yesterday’s annual general meeting.

“All members have reported to us that they have been experiencing reduced calls for their product and, for the first time, we have noticed that imported chicken wings are placed alongside local poultry on the display counters at supermarkets,” Layne told the packed conference room at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

“This only goes to confuse the mind of the local consumer who wishes to purchase local poultry. The deceit of those who would want to put our product next to imported product . . . . We’ve demonstrated real commitment to the sector that retails the product from Barbados. I think we deserve better loyalty and better commitment to this industry,” he said. (AD)
