NEIGHBOURS BELIEVE there was something sinister about a fire that levelled one house yesterday morning in Vauxhall Gardens, Christ Church.

Reports from the Barbados Fire Service said they received a call around 6 a.m. alerting them to the fire at the wooden structure just opposite the Vauxhall Primary School.

While fire fighters battled the fire as best they could, they said the absence of a fire hydrant in the area slowed their ability to extinguish the blaze, which eventually destroyed the house belonging to Elbert Hacksaw, known across the district as “Uncle”.

Neighbours told the WEEKEND NATION the owner also used the property as a base from which he sold vegetables, but had been out of the island for some time when the blaze erupted. (AD)
