THE HIGHER EDUCATION Financial Grant appears to be one of the island’s best kept secrets.
Of the $5 million made available by the Ministry of Education to students facing financial hardship but wishing to study at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus during the 2015-2016 academic year, just over $300 000 has been utilised.
And although the university embarked on an aggressive advertising campaign in an effort to prevent a similar occurrence this year, there has been a further dip in the number of students joining the roll at the campus, suggesting the grants are still not being taken up.
According to a reliable source, while around 6 100 students were enrolled at UWI last year, that number was expected to drop again this academic year. (RB)
