DISAPPOINTMENT far outweighed achievement at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
The 31st Olympiad in Brazil is now history and the first question for sports planners here in Barbados is what are the lessons we learnt from Brazil?
Some of us, yours truly among them, knew many of the answers before the first contingent left for Brazil’s second largest city a few weeks ago.
The most obvious lesson is that Barbados, for the most part, are out of their depth at the Olympic level. We didn’t make our presence felt or even came close to getting a medal.
The truth is, we are a tiny, Third World nation that lacks the financial muscle to expose teams to regular top-flight competition or afford top-quality coaching expertise.
