Weeks after concern about the overgrown state of the canal and its potential for breeding Aedes aegypti mosquitoes – the carriers of dengue, chikungunya and Zika – was raised by residents in the area, a team from the Soil Conservation Unit spent the weekend clearing it of its bush.
And an official from the Drainage Division has promised that the canal will be maintained every three months or so, equipment permitting.
Yesterday, workers from Soil Conservation, operating two excavators, cleared the stretch of the canal, which feeds water into the redeveloped Upper Careenage, from the Globe roundabout to the side of Queen’s Park. (HLE)
