MINISTER OF the Environment Dr Denis Lowe is doing all within his power to make the Christ Church Chancery Lane swamp a protected habitat regulated by the Ramsar Convention.
This promise came yesterday as he addressed the media at the launch of the ministry’s biodiversity website at his Warrens, St Michael office.
“The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is the convention that governs activities as it would relate to Graeme Hall, Chancery Lane, which we’re hoping to bring fully on board as a protected area and we’re hoping also to add Turner’s Hall Woods as another protected area. [The convention is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where the convention was signed in 1971].
“I am pushing the department to accelerate its work to get that site listed under the Ramsar site because I believe it is an important site in Barbados, perhaps the last bastion for wetlands on the island,” said the minister. (AD)
