BARBADOS SHOULD HAVE moved to become a republic long ago.
This is the view of educator Dr David Browne who responded with an emphatic “yes” when Minister of Industry Donville Inniss posed the question on Wednesday night.
Browne, who is also the principal of Queen’s College, said independence was a “constitutional road to a nation-building effort” and he believed republicanism should have been the natural follow-on.
“We should have done it ever since.” He suggested it was time for Barbados to “go after it and determine what we want to be as a nation”.
In his lecture delivered to a full house at Almond Bay Caterers on Hastings Main Road, Browne highlighted Barbados’ struggle to form the Eastern Caribbean Federation known as The Little Eight together with the Windward and Leeward islands, following the break-up of the West Indies Federation. (GC)
