Tridents apology over Anthem mishap

THE BARBADOS TRIDENTS management has apologised for last Monday night’s fiasco when some members of the team continued practising while the Barbados National Anthem was being played.

During an interview at the start of the Tridents versus St Kitts Nevis Patriots Caribbean Premier League T20 cricket game at Kensington Oval, T. Venkat Vardhan, founder and managing director of DNA Networks, the event managers for the Barbados Tridents, said the whole episode was unfortunate.

Vardhan told the WEEKEND NATION the incident “was an unfortunate logistic operation” which was corrected during Wednesday’s game.

“There was a possible misunderstanding of announcements and what should have been done and how it should have been done,” he said. “Nobody did anything on purpose and everything was rectified and everything has gone on in order. On [Monday night] there was a lot of rain and so there was a little bit of confusion.”

Noting that South African Wayne Parnell was “completely unaware” of what was happening when he continued practising as the Anthem played, Vardhan said Parnell did not mean to offend Barbadians.

“One of the reasons was the sound, the rain and the people and the sound did not reach the ground. But we took all measures [Wednesday] and people were informed well ahead of time and everything went smoothly.” (GE)
