FACED WITH PERSISTENT incidents of violent crime, many involving guns, Government is now moving to have a national consultation on the society.
Prime Minister Freundel Stuart announced the plan in the House of Assembly Tuesday night, saying that the problem could not be addressed unless it was properly diagnosed.
He said that a band-aid approach would not work, and while violence had provoked a legal response, it had social roots.
“We now have a duty to get back and try to retrieve the situation. That is why a broad-based consultation on the society has been planned by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Youth for the end of this month,” the Prime Minister said.
We will have one broad-based discussion, as we would have had if we were discussing the economy, on what is going on in the society and how we have to deal with it,” he said during debate on the Magistrates’ Court (Amendment) Bill, 2016. (WILLCOMM)
