Hurdles let-down

LOCAL TRACK and field fans weren’t the only ones expecting to see Barbados’ best hurdlers in Rio.

Apparently Barbados Olympic Association president Steve Stoute was looking for big things from Ryan Brathwaite, Shane Brathwaite and Greggmar Swift after seeming sincerely surprised that none qualified for the Olympics.

Stoute stopped just short of calling the sprint hurdlers medal hopefuls after officially announcing a 12-member squad to the Summer Games that features multi-event queen Akela Jones and Bajan tennis ace Darian King.

“We are very disappointed because initially six months ago if someone had asked me what I felt of our chances I would have said we had a good chance in the hurdles,” said a deeply disheartened Stoute.

“I am very disappointed that none of our men’s hurdlers qualified because so much was expected of them.” (JM)
