Jones eager to have $200m debt reduced

MINISTER OF EDUCATION Ronald Jones says he is anxious to see the $200 million debt Government owes the University of the West Indies removed.

And when its principal Professor Eudine Barriteau meets soon with Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler and his advisers, Jones is hoping some progress would be made towards reducing if not eliminating altogether the mountain of debt on the university’s books.

“The principal met with the ministry, the minister of finance two weeks ago and they have to meet again shortly.

“And that is on the agenda in relation to the (proposed new) library and the resources for them to deal with some of the other challenging aspects of the university,” Jones told the MIDWEEK NATION in an interview in New York on Sunday evening after he participated in a town hall meeting at St Gabriel Episcopal Church where Rev. Eddie Alleyne, a Barbadian, is the rector. (TB)
