Put patients first!

SOME DOCTORS have been chided for their bedside manner and a lack of respect for other members of the profession.

Dr Michael Charles, president of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Medical Alumni Association, said it was particularly worrying when disagreements broke out in the presence of patients.

“I have seen too many times and heard too many times doctors having arguments in front of patients over the patient’s diagnosis or management. Also, you can get doctors calling in to refer a patient and that doctor is openly insulted, sometimes, in front of that patient,” he said.

“You must remember that if you’re working at the hospital, the doctors outside may not have the investigations that you may be privileged to, things in that person’s case may have developed, so their case at that point may not look like the same thing the doctor saw two days ago . . . .” (WILLCOMM)
