CPL eyes governments

FIVE OF THE SIX franchises in the Caribbean Premier League have been sold – mainly to non-West Indian investors – and organisers are encouraging Caribbean governments to get on board in supporting the tournament.

Only one franchise had been sold in the inaugural year in 2013, but the sale of Barbados Tridents and Trinbago Knight Riders this year means St Lucia Zouks is the only unsold franchise.

Three weeks before the start of this year’s tournament, in which organisers are hoping to break even for the first time, CPL chief operating officer Pete Russell is hopeful that regional governments will become more involved in the Twenty20 competition.

“The challenge for us is that you need to have a strong private-public partnership. The governments are very important in all of this. At the end of the day, they benefit the most. Their economies are the ones that are taking all the money,” Russell told NATIONSPORT.
