Gittens makes the grade

EXPERIENCED SPRINTER Ramon Gittens has joined the list of athletes qualifying for the summer Rio Olympic Games.

Gittens dipped under the qualifying standard when he clocked 10.15 seconds (+1.2 wind reading) in the men’s 100 metres preliminaries at the FBK Hengelo Games last weekend. He went on to finish third in the final, clocking 10.24 seconds.

Competing at the same meet, Shane Brathwaite finished fourth in the men’s 110-metre hurdles in 13:56 seconds, while Kierre Beckles was sixth in the women’s 100-metres final in 13:23 seconds after speeding to 13:06 seconds in her heat.

Gittens was also second in the 100 metres in 10.21 seconds at the Ostrava Golden Spike Meet where Brathwaite finished fifth in the 110-metre hurdles in 13.63 seconds.
