A MAJOR EFFORT to solve Barbados’ water challenges is in the pipepline.

In the midst of dealing with the island’s major water shortages, Government is preparing to use “a portion” of $80 million it has borrowed from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

On Friday, the Barbados-based CDB said the financing provided for the Water Supply Network Upgrade Project would include funding for various goods, works, consultants and non-consultancy service.

In the case of the infrastructural works to be done, these will include water production facilities upgrade; reservoir replacement and refurbishment; mains replacement; photovoltaic supply and installation; and non-revenue water equipment supply and installation.

Additionally, the consultancy assignments involved included a climate change adaptation master plan, gender impact assessment, cost service study and tariff review, engineering services, and project coordinator.

In its procurement notice, the CDB said both categories of work would be done between this month and October next year. The project will be executed by the Barbados Water Authority.
